Disable windows zero config windows 7
That list is assuming a lot of things. If the computer is in a domain, then disabling NetLogon is a No-No. If you want to manage the computer remotely, then you can't disable Remote Registry. If you're backing up the machine and the backup software utilizes Volume Shadow Copy then you can't disable that either. Just putting a blanket statement of "Here are the services you can disable" without getting more information about the situation it very risky.
That is very true however and this maybe my mistake i assume that if he sees something on there he will need then he wont disable it. Thank you for all of the rather quick replies and I apologize for the slowness of this reply! As to buying new, I am the parrt-time I. Coordinator for a non profit, and buying new is not often an option as we rely on donations for most of our operating budget.
I buy new when i can, but that is not often. They are on "Kid's Lab" machines, and "new" is not in the cards for now although we are looking for funding for that to happen. For that reason I am grateful for all of the suggestions as to how to hopefully gain some speed for the kids to play some of the games they are aloowed to play.
Believe me, with machines as old and slow as these, anything will be a help. I would try to upgrade them to atleast 1gb i know money can be tight. I also have heard many stories of SSDs helping performance. Sorry - No Can Do! The MBoards on these machines are crippled so as to accept no more than MBytes.
And they have four RAM slots, too. The reason I ask is so you don't gloss over the linux suggestion. If you load them all with a light weight Window Manager, you'll be surprised at the amount of life they have left in them. Again, thanks for the most excellent suggestions.
It may well turn out to be a moot point now, because I have just been informed that our Grants Manager has come up with a grant which should purchase the 20 to 25 machines we need for that lab. As I work with TechSoup. As most non-profits already know, TechSoup. I would love to introduce the idea of Linux to this organization though, as that is the obvious choice for saving on the purchase of Operating Systems.
Thanks again for the help - I think the best route is the safest one, that of not messing with the services! To continue this discussion, please ask a new question.
