Windows error code 1072
I'm running windows 7. I had this error also, make sure the exe the service is pointing to is stopped. Also make sure you don't have any Windows dialog boxes behind your other windows. That is why mine wasn't deleting. There was a windows message behind it saying this service has been deleted or something similar..
I had the same error due to a typo in the service name, i was trying to delete the service display name instead of the service name.
Once I used the right service name it worked fine. The 3rd party application uninstaller had removed the files for the service and then left the service in this pending deletion state. After trying to close all applications, identifing PID of service couldn't for kill, logging off all other users and logging off and on, rebooting was the only fix that worked for me. Now the purpose of this simple application is to open a handle to a service on the computer. How might it do such a thing? Well here is a sample piece of PowerShell code you can run to generate such a test utility to open a service and nothing more:. Assuming all is well, after completing, in the same directory you will have a new tool called ServiceHandleOpenTest. At this point, in a new PowerShell command prompt we can emulate the deletion of the service which might be performed as apart of an update.
Checking if a service is marked for deletion is also not as simple as running a query to the SCM but thankfully it does maintain a flag in the registry we can check.
So it is marked as deleted, fancy that. I wonder what happens if we were to try and delete the service again or try and create a service with the same name?
What would SCM say about that? Lets see, I think I have an idea:. So this is why the installer gets the error when it tries to add the service back! So even if the application deleting the service went into a loop retrying, chances are it would keep getting back The only difference and benefit to doing so might be the uninstaller would have better logging, rather than waiting for the install log to fail on the creation of the service.
Here we can see why an uninstaller might simply declare the service was deleted as we saw sc. Logging can sometimes be misleading. Back in the other PowerShell window of course, if we hit the any key talking to you Homer! Then if we run a query for it:. Magically the service has been cleaned up for us by the SCM, presumably as the last handle to the service has been closed and some reference count in the memory of the SCM has been reduced to 0. We know that if a process exits, the handles are closed so the villain in the story still runs among us and therefore, more than likely is a service or certainly a long lived process.
Given this reduced list of contenders, I would focus initially on services that belong to applications that are most likely to be interested in services. For example an inventory application. If you do have to reboot, there is a chance that as applications exit, the service is removed at that point. Otherwise the SCM services.
